Assistant Professor, Long-wavelength observational extragalactic astrophysics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a full-time professorial stream tenure-track appointment in long-wavelength observational extragalactic astrophysics at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023.

The Department is interested in applications from candidates with a proven research record of planning, obtaining, and conducting scientific investigations on data from long-wavelength facilities to which Canada is contributing, including – but not limited to – ALMA, the JVLA, cosmic microwave background experiments, CHIME, MeerKAT, and eventually the SKA and the ngVLA. Of particular interest are candidates working in the areas of galaxy formation and evolution, supermassive black holes, the nature of dark matter, or testing LCDM cosmology.

Observational astronomers in the Department focus on the formation and evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, on quasars, and on supernovae and other transients. Theoreticians focus on dark matter, early Universe cosmology, the cosmic microwave background, large scale structure, and exoplanetary atmospheres. The development of synergies between theory and observation is highly valued in the Department.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, foster research linkages within and beyond York, and play an active role in widely promoting York's endeavours in research and education. Candidate Qualifications:

Degree: A PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics is required along with relevant postdoctoral experience.

Research Expertise:

Clearly articulated program of research with a specialization in long-wavelength observational extragalactic astrophysics.

Engaged in outstanding, innovative, and externally funded research at the highest level.

Research excellence of a recognized international calibre, as evident in: the research statement; peer-reviewed publications (including forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.

Teaching:

Excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, or promise of excellence in early career scholars, as evident in: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations (e.g., high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning); discussion of teaching in letters of reference.

Additional:

Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
