Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a 2-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr. Benoît Commerçon at the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (http://cral.univ-lyon1.fr) in the AstroENS team based at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon on characterising and modelling protostellar disk formation and evolution using multidimensional numerical simulations. The project aims at linking the scale between molecular clouds and protoplanetary disk by considering non-isolated disks and large scale infall. The focus of the project is to characterise the disk structure as well as the inflow structure  resulting from the collapse of a dense core in order to investigate the environment in which planet will form.

The project includes the following aspects:

  • numerical simulations of dusty fluids, (non-ideal) magneto-hydrodynamics and radiation-hydrodynamics;
  • numerical simulations of protostellar collapse and disk formation and evolution or molecular cloud evolution;
  • comparison of numerical models with observations, synthetic observations.

The project is part of the French ANR Collaborative Research Program DISKBUILD which gathers teams at Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP, team of Sébastien Charnoz, PI), Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL, team of Benoît Commerçon) and Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA, team of Alessandro Morbidelli).

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Astrophysics, Physics or Applied mathematics in relation with hydrodynamics with experience in high-performance computing, star and planet formation or dust-gas flows.

By January 31st 2021, enthusiastic candidates should submit on the web platform at this address https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/CDD/UMR5574-BENCOM-004/Default.aspx?lang=EN i) a CV including a  publication list, ii) a brief statement of research interests and iii) arrange for three letters of reference to be provided separately (sent to [email protected]). Applications which will not be submitted on the web platform will not be considered. Later applications will be considered until the position has been filled.  Informal enquires prior to application are welcome, do not hesitate to contact us ([email protected] ; [email protected]).

Starting date: Between Summer 2021 and Winter 2021. Salary: The initial monthly net salary is around 2000€ and is commensurate with experience.

Included Benefits:

National medical insurance, maternity/paternity leaves, family supplement for children, participation to public transport fees, pension contributions. School is free in France for children above 3. The Université de Lyon provides support for settling in Lyon and France. Miscellaneous : Since 2016, the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon appears in the world's Top 5 small universities of the Times Higher Education ranking. Lyon is a vibrant city with high quality of life (e.g. https://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/02/travel/02goingto.html) The project is funded by the French ANR Program.
