Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position in observational astrophysics to work with Professor Matthew Bayliss. Professor Bayliss' group works on a wide range of topics related to gravitational lensing by massive galaxy groups and clusters. With this post-doctoral position we seek a highly motivated scientist to work on multi-wavelength studies of one or both of: 1) star formation and stellar populations in distant, highly magnified galaxies and/or 2) the foreground galaxy group and cluster lenses. The post-doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to join both the South Pole Telescope (SPT) collaboration, and the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS), and will be given priority to lead high profile projects related to the extensive data that are already in-hand from space (Hubble, Chandra and Spitzer) and ground-based observatories (Magellan, Gemini, VLT, and smaller aperture facilities).

The successful applicant will also be fully supported in their pursuit of new observational programs on space and ground-based facilities, and will be free to spend a substantial fraction of their time on independent research projects. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Bayliss about available data and projects in advance of submitting their applications. The position includes funds for professional travel, publications, computing, and offers a competitive salary.

Applicants must have, or be in the process of completing, a PhD or equivalent in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or closely related field. Qualified candidates must complete our online application at https://jobs.uc.edu (job #40424).  In addition to the online application forms, you must upload a current copy of your CV, a cover letter (1 page), a statementof research interests and goals (<3 pages), and a list of publications, all merged into a single PDF. Use the Additional Documents feature in the system for the attachment. Applicants should arrange for at least three (and no more than five) letters of reference to be sent separately to [email protected] with the applicant's name in the subject line. To guarantee full consideration applications should be submitted no later than 9am EST on Dec. 30, 2019. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.
