The National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA) and the Departments of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invite applications from Ph.D. scientists for the Illinois Survey Science postdoctoral fellowship. This independent fellowship is for 3 years and offers a competitive salary, benefits, and research funds.

NCSA leads data management and processing for the DES project with support from the National Science Foundation, is a partner in the construction and commissioning of LSST and, will be the global central hub for LSST processing, archiving, and serving terabytes of data that will be collected each night of the decade-long survey. Illinois is also an institutional member of the SPT collaboration.

The selected candidate will be part of the new Center for Astrophysical Surveys (CAPS) at NCSA. NCSA is a hub of transdisciplinary research and digital scholarship where University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students, and collaborators from around the globe, unite to address research grand challenges for the benefit of science and society. The candidate will be asked to identify a faculty mentor at the University of Illinois.

Candidates should have or expect to receive a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics by Fall 2020.

Applicants are requested to submit:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Summary of previous and current research (strictly limited to 2 pages)
  • A research proposal relevant to NCSA’s research portfolio (strictly limited to 1 page)

The deadline for applications and all letters of recommendation is December 1, 2019 for full consideration. Please contact Prof. Joaquin Vieira ([email protected]), with any questions. Please send all materials in pdf format to: Deanna Spivey ([email protected]). Please include “CAPS Fellowship” in the subject line for all communications.
