Job Description

The University of Utah Department of Physics and Astronomy is hiring a data scientist to work with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Team to maintain, develop and implement SDSS Science Archive Systems using the Center for High Performance Computing. Position will contribute to upgrading existing SDSSData Archive to an even higher level of accessibility, sustainability, portability, modularity and archival quality, while serving the same uniquely broad audience. Responsibilities include adding Python code for improved access to the SDSS Science Archive Server (SAS); transforming existing SDSS systems into long-term sustainable systems; contributing web and API code to interface between data and astronomers or the public; creating/updating documentation for the SAS; and traveling to peer institutes for code workshops and to form collaborative relationships.

This full-time position requires an advanced degree in a science field (preferably M.Sc., ideally in Physics or Computer Science), with computational research experience. Position is for a minimum of two years, with potential for continuation into at least a third year, if funding permits. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
