Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina Asheville, the UNC system’s designated public liberal arts institution, seeks applicants for a University Fellow for Faculty Diversity. Applicants with specializations in any subfield of physics or astronomy are encouraged to apply in the hope of expanding on or complementing the disciplinary specializations of other ongoing hires and the current faculty—which include observational extragalactic astronomy, solid-state physics, and physics education research.  This 2-3 year University Fellow appointment is ideally intended to be a path to the tenure-track. Pre- and Post-doctoral candidates are invited to apply and are eligible for reduced teaching loads while completing their degree or developing their research or teaching program.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of accomplishment in promoting diverse ways of knowing and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their field or community.

The candidate will be expected to teach up to 12 contact hours per semester; establish a research program that involves undergraduates; and engage in service to the institution, community, and profession. Teaching duties will primarily include contributions to our general education courses in either astronomy or physics. Additionally, candidates will develop upper-level courses within their area of expertise, which may include existing courses such as Optics, Thermodynamics, or Astrophysics, or new courses not currently listed in the catalog. Opportunities also exist for developing courses outside of the department that contribute to the liberal arts and sciences core curriculum. We are seeking candidates with a passion for undergraduate teaching who will join us in our mission to ensure that our curriculum and community welcomes, reflects, and celebrates a diversity of perspectives, lived experiences, and identities.

Review of applications will begin on March 15th and continue until the position is filled. See full ad at https://jobs.unca.edu/ and more information about UNC Asheville’s University fellows program at https://academicaffairs.unca.edu/faculty-openings/university-fellowship-for-faculty-diversity/
