The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Associates to work in the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics (CAAO). Successful applicants would have the opportunity to work with faculty including Jared Males, Ewan Douglas, and others within CAAO on a variety of projects, including the Magellan Extreme Adaptive Optics Instrument (MagAO-X), the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument, the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI), the MMT AO exoPlanet adaptive secondary upgrade, and adaptive optics system design for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT).

Candidates with interests or experience in any of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:

-Ground or space-based high-contrast imaging of exoplanets and debris disks.
-CubeSats and SmallSats for Astronomy.
-Machine learning and large-dataset pipeline development.
-Control theory and sensor fusion.
-Laboratory testing and simulation of optical systems.
-Wavefront control and coronagraphy.
-UA/SO offers a world-class research environment in ground and space-based astrophysics with strong interdisciplinary programs across the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Sciences, and the UA Data Science Institute. Recently selected to build the Aspera CubeSat and home to the JWST NIRCam team, Steward Observatory provides direct access to various world-class facilities for ground-based radio and optical observing. Among these are the Large Binocular Telescope and 6.5m aperture telescopes located in both the northern and southern hemispheres and applicants would be eligible to submit their own science proposals. Candidates should have a PhD in astronomy, planetary science, physics, optical, or aerospace engineering, or a closely related field. The position will provide opportunities for outreach and student engagement, and applicants with interest in outreach are encouraged to apply. Experience contributing to open-source projects is also desirable.
