Job Description

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado is encouraging applications for a Ph.D. research scientist in the field of galactic or extragalactic astrophysics, specifically ultraviolet studies of low-redshift star-forming galaxies in the context of galaxy evolution, feedback, and re-ionization. The successful applicant will support the SPRITE mission; a far-ultraviolet spectrograph expected to launch in late 2022 with the objective of mapping supernova remnants and star-formation regions in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and surveying low-redshift galaxies for evidence of energetic radiation escape, halo emission, and other UV diagnostic signatures.

The researcher will work alongside the instrument team to develop the science program and analysis tools prior to launch, and then lead the local science program effort in conjunction with the SPRITE science team. Preference will be given to applicants with experience analyzing FUSE or Hubble-COS data, galaxy/supernova UV emission modeling, or ground-based observations and data analysis in support of UV observations.

This position is as part of CU Professor Brian Fleming’s research group; a multi-disciplinary experimental astrophysics team that includes undergraduate and graduate students drawn from a broad range of academic backgrounds, as well as both engineers and other scientists. The successful applicant should expect to interact regularly with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students as a part of the broader Colorado Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Program (CUSP; https://lasp.colorado.edu/home/cusp/).
