Job Description

The Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG) at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) invites applications for a position at the Assistant Professor (tenured) level. Outstanding candidates in Astronomical Instrumentation will be considered. Applications from minority and women candidates are encouraged.


IAG USP is the largest astronomy department in Brazil and has access to several world-class facilities including the SOAR and Gemini Telescopes, the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT),  Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and the LLAMA radio telescope. It is also one of Latin America’s leading centers for research in computational astrophysics, which includes the 2300-core Alphacrucis cluster.

The strength of the current faculty mainly lies in observational astronomy (radio to gamma-rays), theory, numerical simulations, with focus on stellar astrophysics, planetary dynamics, cosmology, galaxy evolution, black holes and high-energy astrophysics. We are seeking an instrumentation expert with a competitive research profile. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to establish an internationally competitive research group in instrumentation and run the newly inaugurated labs for astronomical instrumentation at IAG USP to work with large projects (GMT, SOAR, CTA, LLAMA). There are ample funding opportunities from FAPESP—The Science Funding Agency of the State of Sao Paulo.

The successful candidate is expected to maintain a first-class research program, teach in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise students as well as postdocs, contribute broadly to the intellectual vitality of the institution, and provide service to the campus. SALARY: 10670.76 in Brazilian Reais (before taxes).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D or equivalent foreign degree in Astronomy, Physics, or related field; desirable at least one year of postdoctoral or research lab experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated leadership experience in the area of instrumentation and research.
