Job Description

The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Science (MKI) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the area of observational extragalactic astrophysics. The successful candidate will work in the research group of Professor Anna-Christina Eilers (http://www.mit.edu/~eilers/). The group's research focuses on quasar and galaxy evolution, as well as supermassive black hole formation in the early universe using observational data, machine learning methods and/or cosmological simulations. The group is involved in various JWST GTO and GO programs, as well as several other programs from both ground- and space-based observatories. MIT has institutional access to the 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes, LIGO, TESS and the new infrared time-domain telescope WINTER.

REQUIRED:  Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field at the time of appointment; and ability to carry out an independent research program and work collaboratively with students and other members of the MKI community.  Candidates with expertise in all areas of extragalactic astronomy are encouraged to apply.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. In addition to applying via the MIT website, applicants are asked to submit the following via email to Thea Paneth ([email protected]): a research statement of past/current research and future plans (approximately 2-3 pages) and a CV including a list of publications. The applicant should also ensure that three letters of recommendation are submitted directly via email.

The position is for a two-year initial term with extension for a third year contingent upon performance. The start date is flexible within the summer to fall of 2024.

MIT is an equal employment opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin.  Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.
