NPOI Observer Technician I

Lowell Observatory is seeking an entry level Observer Technician for the Naval Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI). The Observer Technician position is part of Lowell Observatory’s Technology Department.  The Observer conducts observations at NPOI according to instructions and target lists specified by the user, generally the Naval Observatory.  He/she may provide technical support to the other interferometer staff.  As Observer, he/she is responsible for the safety of equipment and personnel on site during night operations. 

EXPECTATIONS

• Strong technical and communications abilities,
• Demonstrated astronomical observing experience, and familiarity with reflective optics, optical alignments
• Proficient with varied computer systems, including Windows, Linux and MacOSX based systems,
• Past experience with UNIX systems is desirable,
• Willingness and ability to learn new systems,
• Experience troubleshooting problems,
• Strong attention to detail,
• Ability to work independently, reliably and efficiently,
• Self-motivated
• Professional oral and written communication skills.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy or a related field; though candidates with three or more years’ experience and demonstrated competence in a related role and holding an Associate’s degree (or equivalent) will be considered.

Preparation must include a demonstrated understanding of astronomical coordinate systems and time keeping, and prior experience operating telescopes and astronomical instrumentation (at minimum optical cameras), and experience with UNIX based multi-window computer controls.  Experience operating an interferometer is a strong plus. Also, experience with maintaining astronomical instrumentation, and gathering and reducing astronomical data will be considered positively.
