Job Description

The Astronomy Department at the University of Texas at Austin is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the upcoming large Cycle 2 James Webb Space Telescope program Glimpse (JWST-GO-3293) with Professor John Chisholm. The successful applicant will join a dynamic international research team aiming to find and characterize the faintest galaxies in the early universe using a combination of deep JWST imaging and strong gravitational lensing. Candidates with expertise in JWST/NIRCam data reduction, spectral energy distribution fitting, estimation of galaxy properties of distant galaxies, or gravitational lensing are especially encouraged to apply, although consideration will be given to a wide range of specialties. The applicant will be encouraged to use McDonald observing facilities, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to the vibrant group and Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

Applicants should send a cover letter, a CV, a past and future research statement of no more than four pages, and a list of 3 names of people that can supply a letter of reference. Note that letters of recommendation will be solicited after an initial assessment, and are not required by the deadline. The successful applicant will make it clear how their past and future research relates to the Glimpse project and how they will positively impact the community at the University of Texas. These materials should be sent to [email protected] by January 5th 2024, although applications will be considered until the position is filled.

The anticipated start date is 9/1/2024, but early or later dates can be negotiated. Applicants are expected to have obtained a Ph.D. by this date. Salary will be determined based on experience and there will be a significant research budget to participate in Glimpse related science. Questions and concerns can be sent to [email protected]
