Job Description

Department of Physics and Astronomy
Stony Brook University

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured track faculty position in the field of Computational Astrophysics, with a focus on simulations. This search includes, but not limited to, research in the area of planetary and exoplanetary dynamics and atmospheres, stellar evolution and galactic evolution. The appointment will be made jointly with the Center for Computational Astrophysics in the Flatiron Institute, where the successful candidate will hold a group leader position. The expected start date is September 2017.

The Department benefits from its highly ranked faculty in research and teaching, excellent students, and close affiliation with experimental and theoretical research centers of international reputation, and its proximity to BNL.

The Flatiron Institute, located in Manhattan, is a major new internal scientific unit of the Simons Foundation, focused on the computational aspects of a wide range of basic science. The Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA), led by David Spergel, aims to become a focal point for computational astronomy around the world and plans to develop the computational tools needed for calculations, simulations and analyses. In steady-state, CCA will be comprised of up to 60 research scientists.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Planetary Sciences, Astrophysics, Physics, or an equivalent degree, with demonstrated research credentials. Candidates should have good leadership abilities, an established track record in attracting independent research funding and a keen interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department.
