Job Description

 

The Department of Physics at the University of Surrey is seeking a Research Software Developer. The role provides technical software support to all computational and data science groups within the Physics Department. This is a vital role for our world leading computational physics research in astrophysics, nuclear physics, soft matter and photonics/quantum sciences. The post holder will undertake the development and support of research software frameworks, components, and demonstrators in connection with our physics research programme. This includes code development and optimisation for parallel and GPU architectures, the development of exciting new HPC algorithms to drive and grow research capacity, and the delivery of novel software solutions to outstanding research problems. The role will also assist and advise postdoctoral students, research fellows and staff with research software development.

The Department of Physics has existing research strengths in Astrophysics, Nuclear Physics, Soft Matter, Photonics and Quantum Sciences, and Radiation and Medical Physics. Within the wider University, the Surrey Space Centre has an international reputation in space research and satellite engineering and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing excels in data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The University is one of two strategic partners in the future operation of the National Physical Laboratory. The University is part of the wider South East Physics Network (SEPnet), which comprises the Universities of Hertfordshire, Kent, The Open University, Portsmouth, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, Southampton, Surrey, Sussex and associates Oxford, Reading and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Salary: GBP £32,817 - £35,845 per annum
