Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at Columbia University invites applicants for a postdoctoral research position to work with Professor Lorenzo Sironi on the theory and simulation of astrophysical plasmas, including the physics of collisionless shocks, magnetic reconnection, and plasma instabilities in the interstellar and intergalactic medium and in low-luminosity accretion flows. A strong background in high-energy astrophysics, fluid dynamics and plasma physics, computational methods (MHD and/or kinetic particle-in-cell computational methods) and parallel computing is preferred. A PhD in Astronomy or Physics is required.

The successful candidate will have access to large computational facilities, opportunities for collaboration and support for travel. The post-doctoral position will be initially for one year with possible extension up to three years (based on satisfactory performance and subject to funding). The expected starting date is September 1, 2017 or earlier. To apply, please send a curriculum vitae, publication list, 3-page Research Statement, and have three letters of recommendation sent to [email protected] by December 1, 2016. All applications received by December 1, 2016 will be fully considered, but applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.

Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
