Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University is seeking an ambitious, highly qualified astronomer/astrophysicist for a Junior Lecturer / Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in astronomy. Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field and preference is given to those who were awarded their doctoral degree no more than five years prior to the application deadline, excluding time for parental leave and military service. We anticipate a starting date during late 2020 or early 2021.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and carry out an independent research program within or closely related to the research areas in which the department is currently active. These are solar physics, stars, planets and their formation, supernovae, galaxies, and computational astrophysics, which includes merging compact objects and cosmic reionization. The new assistant professor is also expected to contribute to the successful bachelor and master programmes in astronomy and the supervision of PhD students.

Our department has access to current and emerging state-of-the-art facilities, including national and European supercomputing facilities (in addition to local clusters), all ESO facilities in Chile (including the VLT(I), ALMA and eventually the E-ELT), the Zwicky Transient Facility, LOFAR, the Swedish Solar Telescope, NOT, ESA facilities such as JWST. Researchers at the department profit from close cooperation with the physics departments of Stockholm University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology through the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics as well with Nordita.

An assistant professor is employed for a maximum of six years. The contract may be extended to a maximum of eight years under special circumstances, such as due to sick leave or parental leave. He/she may apply to be promoted to a permanent position as associate professor at the latest nine months before the end of the employment as assistant professor.  This application will be evaluated according to the specific criteria established by the Faculty of Science.
