Job Announcement Text:

The Department of Physics in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a postdoctoral position to work with Professor Simon Foreman on research in cosmology. The primary focus of this position will be on topics relevant to 21cm intensity mapping with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME, https://chime-experiment.ca) and upcoming Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector (CHORD, https://arxiv.org/abs/1911.01777), such as the development of novel analysis techniques and theoretical descriptions of expected measurements. However, the successful candidate will have the freedom to also pursue other topics in cosmology relevant to the interests of Prof. Foreman and others at ASU, including but not limited to large-scale structure, gravitational lensing, the cosmic microwave background, and connections between cosmological observables and fundamental physics.

The successful candidate with become part of ASU’s Cosmology Initiative, which bridges the Department of Physics and the School of Earth and Space Exploration and spans experimental, observational, computational, and theoretical cosmology. The Cosmology Initiative includes research into the epoch of reionization with low-frequency radio observations (Judd Bowman, Danny Jacobs), the cosmic microwave background (Alexander van Engelen, Philip Mauskopf), theoretical cosmology (Matthew Baumgart, Damien Easson, Cynthia Keeler, Maulik Parikh, Tanmay Vachaspati), and other topics, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to interact with these and other researchers at ASU. This position will benefit from significant computing support, via ASU Research Computing resources and a group allocation for the CHIME Collaboration on a large external cluster.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position with an anticipated start date in fall 2023. The initial appointment will be for one year, with expected renewals for a second and third year subject to performance. This position carries a fiscal year salary of no less than $60,000/year. Research funds will be provided for professional travel, personal computing equipment, and other work-related expenses. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, etc. For more information, see https://cfo.asu.edu/benefits-guide-health.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in physics, astronomy/astrophysics, or a closely related field by the time of the appointment. Candidates must be within four years from receipt of their doctoral degree.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform research in cosmology.
  • Evidence of effectively communicating research through conference presentations and/or research publications.
  • Computing experience in the context of scientific research (e.g. Python, C).
  • Demonstrated experience or future commitment to working with diverse student, faculty, researcher, and staff populations
  • Research interests complementary to those of faculty and researchers in ASU’s Cosmology Initiative

To apply, please submit the following materials electronically using this link: http://apply.interfolio.com/115365

  1. A current curriculum vitae with publication list
  2. A statement of research accomplishments and interests, indicating their relevance to this position (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
  3. A statement addressing how your past and/or potential contributions to diversity and inclusion will advance ASU’s commitment to inclusive excellence (maximum 1 page)
  4. Contact information for 3 references

The initial deadline to apply is December 23, 2022. If not filled, applications will be evaluated every week thereafter until the search is closed. For questions, please contact Prof. Foreman at [email protected].
