We are seeking to fill a full-time non-tenured Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington.  The anticipated hire date is September 16, 2022 . The service period is 9 months (September 16 - June 15), with the opportunity to teach in the Summer quarter. The initial appointment will be for 3 years. The individual who fills this position will teach undergraduate, in-person and online classes, including large introductory classes and smaller upper-level courses for majors. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the implementation of best practices throughout the instructional program and the training of teaching assistants. Outside of the classroom, they will coordinate the UW in the High School program, including observing and evaluating some of the twenty high school classrooms teaching UW Astro 101 and Astro 150.  Additional opportunities to contribute to the broader educational mission of the department include developing planetarium programs, giving public talks, and assisting with the Pre-Major in Astronomy Program (Pre-MAP). The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to academic strategic planning, management, and administration as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field. Applicants must have expertise in mentoring students, applicable to training Teaching Assistants (TAs) or their equivalents. A successful candidate must have expertise in teaching a diverse student population and supporting DEI efforts in a higher education setting. Lastly, applicants must have expertise in independently developing materials for a range of modalities to large classes, including in-person and online classes.

Experience in teaching large (100+ student) classes, in both in-person and fully-online formats.

Curriculum Development in physical sciences, with emphasis on general-education-level undergraduate audiences.

Demonstrated abilities in mentoring students and peers and supporting the dissemination of best practices in Astronomy education.

Demonstrated Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion which may include, but is not limited to,  any of the following: (1) familiarity with current research related to DEI in academic settings; (2) training in and implementation of equitable teaching practices; (3) understanding of DEI as demonstrated through lived experience.
