Job Description

Launched in October 2019, NSF’s NOIRLab is the US national center for ground-based night-time astronomy. NOIRLab has five programs: Gemini Observatory, Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Community Science and Data Center, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. NOIRLab operates as a matrix organization, providing services across a range of programs with facilities in three geographic locations: Arizona, Chile and Hawai’i. With a staff of approximately 450 people and an annual budget of one hundred million dollars, NOIRLab has a complex set of partnerships and operating requirements. While the principal sponsor of NOIRLab is the National Science Foundation, the NOIRLab receives funds from the US Department of Energy, NASA, and other US and international institutions in support of a wide range of activities.

The Communications, Education and Engagement (CEE) group consists of approximately 30 staff including communications specialists, educators, graphics professionals, and other content professionals. CEE is responsible for telling the story of NOIRLab and its programs in a cohesive and coordinated manner that is tailored to each of its target audiences.

CEE is currently searching for a Public Information Officer and a Social Media Coordinator to join the team:

Public Information Officer:

Help us tell the story of our new organization! NOIRLab is seeking a Public Information Officer (PIO) to join the Communications, Education & Engagement (CEE) group to be responsible for the production of part of NOIRLab communication products targeting external audiences. The PIO is responsible for the production of communications products including press releases, photo releases, web announcements, and maintaining the content of the public website noirlab.edu. This position will also liaise closely with the Research and Science Services (RSS) team of NOIRLab to ensure important news for the science community is disseminated. The work involves building relationships, editing and some writing, and coordination of audiovisuals.

Working as part of CEE’s Communications Group the PIO is charged with the production of NOIRLab’s communication products targeting external audiences.

  • Leading the production and dissemination of press releases, external announcements, and other external news products including products for the science community;
  • Managing the integration of written and visual material in the development of audiovisual products;
  • Managing and developing content for the website, including the production of new pages, Spanish translations, and coordinate updates to existing pages;
  • Building relationships with key contacts in NOIRLab's RSS team to ensure appropriate dissemination of news to our science audiences.
  • Participating in the ongoing process of improving NOIRLab’s strategy for external and internal communications;
  • Leading NOIRLab's communication activities at professional conferences and workshops;
  • Participation and engagement with colleagues at professional communications and scientific meetings.

Social Media Coordinator:

The Communications, Education and Engagement (CEE) team is looking for a full-time social media coordinator to manage all social media channels under NOIRLab. This currently comprises 19 channels. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience managing multiple channels for an organization and have experience implementing a social media plan.

COVID-19 Policy Update: AURA has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy that requires all employees to be vaccinated, unless qualified for an exemption based on medical or religious reasons. All new employees will be required to comply with this policy and will be required to present proof of full vaccination or submit a completed request (including supporting documents, if applicable) for an exemption at least five (5) business days prior to their start of employment. Individuals who fail to meet this deadline may have their employment start date delayed.

This is a requirement for all employees working onsite or from home (telework or hybrid remote work schedule). Currently the vaccination requirement does not apply to any future AURA employees working in Chile, regardless of their nationality or type of contract.

AURA currently offers a mix-model workspace (office & virtual) and stimulating environments for all, with most staff working virtually from home during the COVID-19 crisis through Spring 2022. The safety of our staff and community is our top priority. We will continue to interview and screen candidates in this new virtual landscape and offers of employment can be extended and new hires will onboard virtually. Employees are required to be residents in their base job location within a limited time from their start date.

Preference will be given to qualified internal candidates and to qualified Native Americans living on or near the Tohono O'odham reservation in Arizona.
