Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is dedicated to astrophysical questions ranging from the exploration of our Sun to the evolution of the cosmos. Key aspects are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics, supported by the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes, and e-science. The institute is located in the beautiful Potsdam-Babelsberg area, at the southwestern border of the Berlin metropolitan area. The AIP continues the tradition of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam and the Berlin Observatory (founded 1700) and has about 200 employees.

For the reinforcement of the Galaxies and Quasars section we are looking for a Postdoc / scientific software developer in galaxy evolution.

The WEAVE-Apertif survey will obtain optical integral field spectroscopy data for an HI selected sample of nearby galaxies. The incumbent will derive properties of ionized gas, stellar populations and kinematics and scientifically exploit the data. The 4MOST instrument is an optical multi-object spectrograph being developed under AIP leadership for ESO. The successful candidate will assist in the development of the 4MOST distributed operations model, in particular with requirements management and verification of software.

Applicants shall hold a university degree in astrophysics or related discipline and have previous experience with galaxy spectroscopic data analysis. Any of the following will be an additional asset: familiarity with formal software development; work in large, distributed project teams; capability to successfully handle several projects simultaneously.

The appointment will initially be made for 2 years, with possible extensions based on performance and availability of funding.

Application documents will be made available to a selection committee and to the committees and officers to be involved. Application documents will be kept at AIP until at least three months after completion of the appointment process.

To apply, please send a curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests to the address [email protected]. Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address. Applications received before April 30th 2021 will be given full consideration. Later applications may be considered until the position is filled.

Compensation and Benefits

Included Benefits

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organizations in Germany and include employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, maternity leave, retirement benefits, and a subsidy for a job ticket. The AIP offers an equal opportunity environment with a diverse and inclusive work culture. Applications from women and other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged. Preference will be given to people with disabilities with equal competence.
