Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in extragalactic astronomy to work at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris (IAP), France. The appointment is up to three years and is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) within the project "investigating MAssive Galaxy Emergence & Early Evolution" (IMAGE). Our collaboration includes several doctoral students, postdocs and permanent researchers at IAP and LAM. IAP and LAM are amongst the largest French centers for extragalactic astrophysics with a variety of lively interconnected research groups on galaxy evolution, large-scale structure and advanced statistical methods.
iMAGE aims to study the rise of massive galaxies from the primordial Universe to z~2. This project combines a unique JWST dataset with state-of-the art hydrodynamical simulations and machine learning techniques to understand the origins of massive galaxies. The successful applicant will develop a suite of zoom-in cosmological simulations and compare them to JWST observations -- in particular COSMOS-Web -- to understand which physical processes drive the extreme phases of early mass assembly. The successful applicant will work at IAP in close collaboration with Clotilde Laigle (Paris). Olivier Ilbert (Marseille), Yohan Dubois (Paris), Maxime Trebitsch (Groningen) and the other members of the project. The applicant will have access to two high-performance computer clusters and French HPC time as well as significant travel funding.
We are looking for applicants with experience in cosmological or hydrodynamical numerical simulations. Applications should be uploaded at the following address: https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/CDD/UMR7095-CLOLAI-002/Default.aspx?lang=EN and they should include a brief summary of previous research and a statement of current research interests (4 pages max), a curriculum vitae, and a list of publications. In addition, the names and email addresses of two to three referees should be provided. Referees will be contacted if the applicant is selected for interview. Applications will be reviewed starting on November 15 2022, and the position will remain open until filled. Starting dates are negotiable, with a preferred period between April and October 2023. The salary will be fixed at the standard post-doc level, based on experience. Note: on the CNRS application platform the deadline is currently set to October 20, 2022 but will be extended to November 15, 2022.
Health insurance, parental leave, state-subsidised schools and childcare are provided to all employees in France.
