Applications are invited for the Bolton Fellowship, a presigious three year postdoctoral appointment within the CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (which hosts the Australia Telescope National Facility) science program. The Bolton Fellowship is Australia's longest standing prize fellowship and provides an outstanding opportunity for post-doctoral research in Australia. The Bolton Fellowship is designed to help young scientists build strong careers as independent researchers. Bolton Fellows are encouraged to undertake independent research and/or development in any area relevant to the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) observational capabilities.
CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (CASS) operates the ATNF, Australia's premier radio astronomical facility. The ATNF is composed of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Parkes 64-m telescope and the Long Baseline Array. These facilities provide opportunities for world-class radio astrophysics in the frequency range of 1-100 GHz. Early science is now underway on ASKAP, a powerful new instrument for high dynamic range, ultra-wide-field radio astronomy between 0.7 and 1.8 GHz. CASS is a consortium partner in the recently expanded Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) covering the 80-300 MHz range, and a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) that will be sited in Western Australia.
Bolton Fellows may choose to be based either at the CASS offices in Sydney or Perth, Australia. Sydney and Perth are both cosmopolitan, multi-cultural cities with beaches within an easy commute from many suburbs. The Sydney astronomical community consists of researchers at the ATNF, the Australian Astronomical Observatory, The University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales and Macquarie University. Perth also offers a vibrant research community, with the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research located at the nearby University of Western Australia and Curtin University campuses.
A generous discretionary research allowance will be available, together with assistance with relocation and other benefits, including health insurance. CSIRO offers all staff flexible working arrangements as standard. CSIRO actively supports a safe, healthy and enriching working environment for all staff.
