Job Description

CMB-S4 Postdoctoral Fellow - 94469
Organization:  PH-Physics

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Physics Division has an opening for a CMB-S4 Postdoctoral Fellowto join the team.

In this exciting role, you will assist the CMB-S4 data analysis and simulation team, working on the development of realistic models of emission of foreground emission in the frequency range of CMB-S4 observations (30-300 GHz), as well as on the development of models of slow drifts and systematic errors due to the terrestrial environment (atmosphere, ground pickup, thermal instabilities). Your responsibilities will include supporting the development of a global simulation pipeline for CMB-S4, and contributing to the generation of mock CMB data for CMB-S4 data challenges.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on January 7, 2022.

What You Will Do:

  • Monitor, collect, and reprocess existing relevant data sets from sky observations from the radio to the sub-mm.
  • Maintain and improve foreground simulation algorithms.
  • Analyze and characterize atmospheric emission in existing CMB observations.
  • Implement models of atmospheric emission in the CMB-S4 simulation pipeline.
  • Interact with CMB-S4 collaboration science working groups to assist them with simulations in response to the needs of the CMB-S4 science analyses.
  • Contribute simulation tools to regular CMB-S4 software releases, including validation and documentation.
  • Contribute to the operations of the simulation pipeline at NERSC to generate mock data for CMB-S4 data challenges.
  • Contribute to the planning and completion of projects within CMB-S4 Data Management.
  • Contribute to larger collaborative projects with others from the CMB-S4 Data Management team.
  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration, interacting with LBNL and other investigators on similar or related scientific problems.
  • Prepare research papers for publication and present results at seminars and conferences.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor or oversee Ph.D. students.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. or equivalent in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in cosmology or astronomy research.
  • Analysis experience with imaging data.
  • Experience with signal and image processing tools (Fourier and wavelet analysis, filtering, spectral estimation, etc.)
  • Experience with data processing on Linux clusters and/or High Performance Computing systems.
  • Strong programming skills, in particular in Python.
  • Knowledge of astronomical data processing methods.
  • Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals on a collaborative software project.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • C, C++, and/or IDL programming languages.
  • MPI programming and/or non-MPI parallelism methods.

How To Apply:
Please go here to create a profile and submit the requested application materials. Note that applications can only be made via this Academic Jobs Online URL. For inquiries please contact Kelly Rushing ([email protected]).

The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • A list of up to ten relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications.
  • A statement describing current and future research interests (3-page limit excluding figures and references).
  • A statement describing past activities and future interests in diversity, outreach and leadership (1 page maximum).
  • Arrange to have 3 letters of reference submitted (at least one reference from outside LBNL/UC Berkeley).

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
