The University of Arizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory invites applications for the JWST Arizona/Steward Postdoc in Early galaxies and Reionization (JASPER) Scholar positions. We expect to fill at least three JASPER Scholar positions, starting in summer/fall 2022. JASPER Scholars will be appointed to renewable one-year terms, for up to three years.
The University of Arizona is a center of JWST research. In the area of early galaxy formation and reionization, Arizona scientists are leading a wide range of Cycle-1 GO and GTO programs to study the first galaxies, high-redshift quasars and supermassive black holes, early large scale structures, the intergalactic medium and cosmic reionization. These programs will utilize all JWST instruments and have been allocated a total of more than 1500 primary and parallel hours in Cycle-1. A full list of JASPER-affiliated JWST Cycle-1 programs can be found at: https://bit.ly/3jQkwTV. Arizona-based NIRCam and MIRI instrument and GTO teams provide additional in-house technical expertise for JWST data analysis.
JASPER Scholars are expected to collaborate with one or more JWST GO and GTO science teams. They will fully participate in data reduction and scientific analysis in these programs as well as in complimentary programs using HST and ground-based telescopes. JASPER Scholars are also encouraged to conduct their independent research programs with up to 50% of their research time.
JASPER Scholars will have full access to the observational facilities of the University of Arizona, including the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT Telescope, the two 6.5m Magellan Telescopes, the 2.3m Bok Telescope, the 1.8m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, the 10m Heinrich-Hertz Submillimeter Telescope, the Kitt Peak 12m mm-wave Telescope as well as advanced computing facilities at Steward Observatory. The University of Arizona is a full member of the SDSS-V, DESI and LSST collaborations.
- Submit the cover letter, CV and a research statement, as one single pdf file, to [email protected].
- In the cover letter, please include (a) the names and email addresses of three people who could provide letters of reference and (b) the JASPER-affiliated JWST projects that the applicant is interested in working on.
- You will receive a confirmation email after we have received your application. Review will start on Dec 3, 2021. Reference letters will be requested after the first round of reviews.
We strive to create an inclusive and diverse research environment at Arizona and strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented groups to apply. Please contact [email protected] for additional information.
