Applications are invited in connection with a postdoctoral position at the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i in Honolulu, to work with Ben Shappee (firstname.lastname@example.org), Christoph Baranec (email@example.com), and Mark Chun (firstname.lastname@example.org) in the roboticization effort of the University of Hawai’i (UH) 2.2-meter telescope, also known as UH88”, on Maunakea as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation award. The robotic UH88” telescope will be well instrumented with the second generation of the robotic Adaptive Optics system (Robo-AOII), a wide-field optical imager, and the SuperNovae Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS). The selected candidate is expected to (a) develop a robotic scheduler balancing between programs and instruments, (b) aid in the interface between the scheduler and telescope control system and instruments, (c) develop data archiving and data severing infrastructure, (d) monitor data quality and telescope performance, (e) integrate existing data reduction pipelines in the data severing infrastructure, (f) participate in other robotcization activities, and (g) carry out a research program using the UH88” telescope and other observing resources. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for observing time on all Maunakea telescopes.
The appointment will be a Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (2-3 years in duration). Continuation of employment is dependent upon availability of funds, program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. The start date is flexible and can be anytime in 2020. The annual salary will be approximately $68,500 per year and will include funding support for research activities.
