SUBARU SUPPORT ASTRONOMER – ID# 220406.
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to three (3) years in duration with possible extension for two (2) more years), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with NAOJ Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,295/Mon.
DUTIES: Supports visiting & resident astronomers to carry out observ for maximum scientific output. Helps astronomers in prep of observations & data reduction. Participates in science operation of observatory instruments, checks quality of obtained data & keeps instrument operational for nightly observations in coop w/other observatory support staff. Req travel to telescope site. May be assigned as primary scientist for 1 instrument. A 2nd & 3rd instrument may be assigned as deemed appropriate. Pursues progs of astronomical rsrch, publishes papers & presents results at conferences. A significant amt of time will be spent at a high alt of 14,000 ft.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in astronomical observations & data reduction, development of optical or infrared instruments & research in astronomy. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowl necessary to conduct independent astronomical research. Abil to undertake independent prog in astronomical rsrch. Good written & oral communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (& if use of personal vehicle on job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) & maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle w/manual trans. Driving exper of at least 1 yr. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet & pass a post offer high-alt medical exam. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Prev involvement in astronomical instrumentation incl design, hardware & software dev, & maint. Experw/image processing & data anlys. Communication skills in addt lang other than English.
