Location
The post will be based at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada (Spain), with regular presence at ESA Headquarters in Paris required.

Duties
The Director of Science is responsible for the definition, planning and execution of the Agency’s Science Programme, for setting the cooperative links with the related programmes of ESA Member States and international partners and for the definition of the scientific elements of exploration projects, as well as of the PRODEX Programme. The Director will provide, as required, scientific advice and support to programmes managed by other directorates of the Agency.
Education
We are looking for candidates with a minimum of a master’s degree in a scientific subject, solid experience in management and a strong technical background.
Requirements
Applicants should be top-level scientists of high international repute with in-depth knowledge and experience in functions related to the role. Experience in flight hardware and management of large-scale international scientific projects will be an important asset, as will experience in the field of space activities, preferably acquired in an international setting, and with industry.
Key qualities required for the post are an innovative spirit and a strategically-oriented mind, a proven capacity to lead change and manage people and teams, excellent relationship management and negotiation skills and the ability to influence high-level decisions.
