Job Description

The Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory at Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist in Stellar Astrophysics position. The successful candidate will work with Professor Marcel Agüeros on completing a stellar rotation census of benchmark star clusters, with the goal of producing a modern empirical gyrochronology relationship applicable to low-mass stars, young and old. The candidate will lead our group effort to improve rotation-based age-dating techniques for low-mass stars by calibrating gyrochronology with a modern, expanded database of rotation period measurements for benchmark star clusters. The candidate will also be encouraged to participate in grants proposal writing to NASAs Guest Investigator program for TESS, NASA ADAP, etc. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Astronomy or similar discipline, a proven track record of research excellence in the field of stellar astrophysics. A minimum of three years of Postdoctoral work experience in stellar astrophysics is desirable. The ideal candidate would have experience performing some of the following analyses, measuring stellar properties and abundances from high-resolution spectroscopy of cluster members, characterizing star clusters, refining membership lists, and identifying candidate binaries, measuring stellar rotation from existing high-precision high-cadence light curves (e.g., Kepler, K2), extracting high-quality light curves from low-cadence ground-based imaging data (e.g., PTF, ZTF) and TESS full-frame image data, and measuring stellar rotation from these light curves and acquiring and analyzing low- and high-resolution spectra to measure chromospheric activity. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications),a statement of no more than three pages describing past research as well as future interests (including figures and references), and the names of three individuals who can submit letters of recommendation upon request. Inquiries regarding this position should be sent to [email protected]. Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2020,and will continue until the position is filled. The application deadline date is January 02, 2021. Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran/
