Two postdoctoral positions on planet formation in Chile. Theory and observations
Job Summary
Job Description
The recently established Núcleo Milenio for Planet Formation (NPF, http://www.npf.cl/), formed by researchers in Valparaíso and Santiago, Chile, invites applications to fill two postdoctoral positions. One position is for a theoretician interested in planet formation or protoplanetary disks, to be based in Santiago. The second position is for an observational astronomer, based in Valparaíso, with experience in similar topics, where a solid background in high-angular resolution observations will be considered a plus.
The postdoctoral scholars will be working directly with Amelia Bayo (http://ameliabayo.wixsite.com/astronomer), Johan Olofsson (http://johan-olofsson.com/), Matthias Schreiber (all at Universidad de Valparaíso), Jorge Cuadra (http://www2.astro.puc.cl/plaga/, at PUC in Santiago), and their respective groups, including Olofsson’s Max Planck Tandem Group. Moreover, they will interact with the engineers at UTFSM (http://www.cctval.cl/), Valparaiso, working on new astronomical mirror technology and challenges, in direct contact with the Planet Formation Imager (PFI) team.
The appointments will be for 2 or 3 years initially, with the possibility of extension for up to 6 years, depending on funding renewal and satisfactory performance. One position is available immediately, and the other from the second half of 2018.
The salary and benefits offered are competitive for Chilean standards. Both UV and PUC provide an active, international academic environment, with weekly seminars and colloquia. As members of the Chilean community, the postdoctoral researchers will qualify to apply for the reserved 10% observing time on all telescopes in Chile, and will have access to the HPC facilities (two ~500-core computers) at PUC.
Applicants should submit to [email protected] an updated CV, and a short (max 3 pages) research statement, plus arrange for two reference letters to be sent to the same e-mail address. Deadline for applications is the 20th of December.
For further inquiries please contact NPF Director, Amelia Bayo, or the other NPF members mentioned above ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]).
