Faculty Position in Astrophysics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at California State University, Northridge, invites applications for a tenure-track position to begin in Fall 2018 at the Assistant Professor level in observational astrophysics. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree, preferably with postdoctoral experience in the research areas of exoplanets and in complementing research areas of the current faculty. Current research areas of the faculty include: star and planet formation, exoplanet characterization, and solar astronomy. Additionally, considerations for candidates with research areas involving observational programs with current and future ground based instrumentation and future space missions, are also highly desirable.

Candidates should have a strong interest and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in astronomy and physics. Applicants must demonstrate commitment and ability in teaching, mentoring, and working with a diverse student population. Those with experience working in a diverse student population are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a vigorous independent research program with strong potential for external funding, and make efforts to secure such funding. It is anticipated that the University will provide start-up funds and a reduced teaching load during the first three years of the appointment. The campus is located in a suburb of Los Angeles, in close proximity to other Universities and major research centers.

To apply, please submit (1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) summary of research and (4) teaching interests and (5) arrange for three letters of recommendation to be directly submitted to interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/46621. All inquiries should be sent to the Astrophysics Search Committee at [email protected]. Screening of complete applications will begin on January 15, 2018. Priority will be given to complete applications received by January 31, 2018 and position will remain open until filled.

Filling the position is subject to budgetary considerations. At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. In compliance with the Annual Security Report & Fire Safety Report of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, California State University, Northridge has made crime-reporting statistics available on-line at https://www.csun.edu/sites/default/files/clery-report.pdf. Print copies are available by request from the Department of Police Services, the Office for Faculty Affairs, and the Office of Equity and Diversity.
