Job Description

Lead Systems Engineer - 93874
Organization: EG-Engineering

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a Lead Systems Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will support the CMB-S4, a next generation cosmic microwave background experiment, in the LBNL Physics Division. CMB-S4 is a combined National Science Foundation/Department of Energy (NSF/DOE) project to build more than 20 radio telescopes at the South Pole and in Chile incorporating highly sensitive superconducting cameras with sub-Kelvin detectors. CMB-S4 is designed to examine the inflationary model of our universe and will determine fundamental cosmic parameters, e.g. masses of neutrinos, the nature of dark energy, and general relativity at large scales.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the systems engineering effort for all the elements of CMB-S4, including telescope, detector, instrument control, data acquisition, and data management systems, as well as the infrastructure at the telescope deployment sites.
  • Manage the systems engineering functions of a cross-functional and geographically dispersed project team including engineers and scientists.
  • Develop, identify, document, and manage requirements and interfaces through their life-cycle, using the Jama Connect Software requirements management tool.
  • Clearly communicate about project technical status, issues, and successes with project teams and senior management.
  • Manage and document the technical baseline, requirements, interfaces, technical resource budgets, verification, and validation among other systems engineering roles.
  • Ensure that the project’s master SolidWorks CAD model is kept up to date and accurate, integrating subsystems from all of the CMB-S4 institutions.
  • Coordinate presentations at meetings of appropriate committees.
  • Oversee preparations for reviews; organize and conduct technical reviews.
  • Coordinate with EHS and management on work safety and ensure that safety considerations are properly implemented in requirements and verification plans.
  • Help recruit, hire, organize, and manage technical staff.
  • Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in engineering through, for example, participation in design reviews, workshops, and conferences.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Author or contribute to conference presentations and publications.

What is Required:

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or related field or overall equivalent experience. 8-10 years of relevant experience or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Technical leadership experience with multi-disciplinary, widely-distributed team members and institutions.
  • Demonstrated systems engineering experience, preferably including construction of scientific instruments.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of successfully performing systems engineering functions on complex, multi-discipline, engineering projects.
  • Ability to exercise, sound engineering judgment  and decision making with a wide range in scope, analytical ability, and evidence of strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and lead other scientists and engineers in defining goals and implementing activities to realize the goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective engineering direction and judgment for developmental work and to creatively resolve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to interface and work within a large diverse team and help manage technical activities at other institutions.
  • Excellent technical communication skills.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects.
  • Well versed in CAD and other engineering tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics and extensive experience with scientific construction projects.
  • Combined experiences in engineering design and systems design of scientific projects.
  • A systems’ engineering background in fields related to telescope or vacuum cryostat systems.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • his position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
