Job Description

Observational Astrochemistry Postdoctoral Fellow – ID# 222075.

Institute for Astronomy. Non-Regular, Full Time, Limited Term (up to two (2) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

Minimum Monthly Salary: $4,051/Mon.

Duties: Pursues innovative research in observational astrochemistry, particularly in the areas of interstellar and circumstellar ices.  Performs work using the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy instrument, and the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSpec) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) slit spectrometers of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Develops software for the optimal extraction of spectra from the NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy instrument of JWST, and for high signal-to-noise extraction of spectra from the NIRSpec and MIRI slit spectrometers. Reduces  NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopic data.  Makes the reduced data and catalogs of ice abundances available to the community.  Pursues collaborative and independent observational work using JWST and various Maunakea telescopes. Publishes research.

Primary Qualifications: Education/training: PhD from an accredited college or university in astronomy or related field. Experience: At least two (2) years of experience in astrochemical research or related areas, including python programming, and  with reducing and analyzing spectroscopic data.  Abil/Know/Skills: Knowledge of current research in astrochemistry. Ability to reduce and analyze spectroscopic data.   Proficiency in python.  Demonstrated ability for independent work and capable of conducting independent research in an international collaboration.
