About the Role

We invite applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the STFC funded project “Planet Formation and Migration in Inviscid Protoplanetary Discs”, which is led by Prof. Richard Nelson and Dr. Sijme-Jan Paardekooper. The research will use hydrodynamical and/or magnetohydrodynamical simulations of protoplanetary discs with embedded planets to address a variety of open questions in the theory of planet formation.

About You

The successful applicant will possess a PhD in Astrophysics (awarded or close to completion) or a closely related discipline and will preferably have experience of working on research projects that are closely related to those outlined above. Research experience in performing hydrodynamical simulations is essential to the role.

About the School

The School of Physics and Astronomy has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Astronomy, Experimental Particle Physics, Theoretical Physics, and Condensed Matter and Materials Science. Research in the Astronomy Unit is focused on Planetary Systems, Cosmology, and Space Plasma Physics. The School has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes.

The School comprises around 50 academic staff, 42 research staff and 21 professional services staff. The School is home to 83 PhD students and approximately 400 undergraduate students. Recently, approximately £12M was invested in refurbishment of the School building to provide state-of-the-art research, teaching and study facilities for staff and students.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time (35 hours per week), fixed term appointment for 30 months, with an expected start date of 1st June 2021 (or shortly thereafter). The starting salary will be Grade 4 in the range of £33,324 - £40,194 per annum (pro-rata), or Grade 5 in the range of £42,433 - £44,807 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes.
