The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Experimental Astrophysics with focus in Solar Physics
(Succession of Prof. Oskar von der Lühe)

in the Department of Physics. This is a joint Appointment between the University of Freiburg and the Leibniz-Institute for Solar Physics (KIS) with a simultaneous appointment as a member of the KIS board with the possibility to assume the institute Director function for a candidate with appropriate qualifications. Start-date: 01.04.2022.

The successful candidate shall lead scientific work in the field of experimental solar physics and optical and near infrared solar instrumentation. Excellent knowledge and successful leadership in experimental astrophysics techniques, such as astronomical optical systems, adaptive optics, interferometry, polarimetry, spectroscopy, imaging, image reconstruction, solar observations, etc, are important prerequisites.

As a member of the KIS Board, the candidate shall be responsible for the scientific leadership and management of the institute’s Program Area II "Observatory & Instrumentation", development and implementation of its research objectives and strategic plans. Excellent competence in experimental work with the largest European solar telescope GREGOR as well as design and construction of novel solar instrumentation for GREGOR, the world-largest solar telescope DKIST, and in the future for the European Solar Telescope EST in cooperation with the KIS partners are expected. Excellent skills in project and time management, problem solving, leading personnel, communication and teamwork are essential for this appointment. Mobility and willingness to work at remote observing facilities of the institute are expected. As a member of the KIS Board, the successful candidate is responsible for the management of the entire institute. He / she should therefore have profound experience in the management of scientific institutions.
