Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in extragalactic astronomy at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University.
The successful candidate will work in the group of Prof. Serena Viti. The postdoctoral appointment will be for 3 years. This project is within the framework of the ERC project, MOPPEX, which centers on the use of molecules to shed light on the physical and chemical structure of nearby  galaxies, in order to characterize  the energetic processes, as well as the dense gas structure, that determine their appearance. More details about the project can be found on the MOPPEX webpage: https://moppex.github.io

Leiden Observatory is the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands, with about 35 faculty and adjunct faculty, 50 postdoctoral researchers, 50 MSc and 80 PhD students, and 30 support staff. Leiden is a charming university town with international flair.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop hydrodynamical models to be combined with chemical models for the modelling of nearby galaxies, in particular AGN-dominated and starburst galaxies. Some experience in (preferably) dynamical and/or chemical modelling is a pre-requisite. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. The three year position is available as of 1 September, 2021. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://jobs.strw.leidenuniv.nl/2021/VitiPD/ by the deadline of 15 April 2021. A complete application includes a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a two-page statement of research experience and interests. In addition, applicants should arrange for three reference letters to be submitted at the same web link before the indicated deadline. Questions may be directed to Professor Serena Viti ([email protected]).
