Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Receiver Development for SKA.
The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 24 months.
Oxford University is leading the development of the Band 3/4/5 feed package for the SKA-Mid telescope of the Square Kilometre Array. This cryogenic feed system will be fitted to the 133 SKA-Mid dishes, providing the SKA with up to five frequency bands. The initial project is to build and test a prototype feed package with two bands installed, and test it on the SKA prototype dish antenna in South Africa. There will also be the opportunity to become involved in a number of other projects in advanced radio astronomy instrumentation, including CMB foregrounds experiments, and new radio telescopes in Mexico and Thailand.
The successful candidate will work on modelling and testing the performance of the system components, and the integration and testing of the complete SKA receiver. This will also include modelling (using software such as GRASP) and testing of the receiver performance installed on an SKA dish antenna. They will also assist with the production of a full document set describing the receiver, ready for mass manufacture. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.
Applicants should possess, or be close to obtaining, a doctorate in physics, electrical engineering or a related field. Experience with working with cryogenic radio receivers is essential, as is familiarity with RF and microwave test equipment and techniques. Previous experience with electromagnetic simulation and CAD software packages would be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to independently manage a development area within the overall project, to contribute to and communicate with SKA project via papers, technical documents and presentations.
