Job Description

Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities. The University draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

FULL PROFESSOR FOR MULTI-WAVELENGTH ASTROPHYSICS (SALARY SCALE W3)

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, invites applications for the position of a Full Professor for Multi-wavelength Astrophysics (Salary Scale W3) to start as soon as possible.

Astrophysical research at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum is closely connected with plasma- and particle-physics. This research is currently focused on the generation, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays that need to be understood on scales relevant for particle-physics and plasma-phenomena.

The candidate is expected to establish a sustainable research program in observational astrophysics, be capable to produce and publish original research, be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in institutional and professional services. The candidate’s research should focus on astrophysical questions that are linked to plasma-astrophysics and can be tackled with multi-wavelength observations. An active participation in one or more of the major national and international astrophysical facilities would be desirable. A future integration into the Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics Center (RAPP Center) is expected. Active participation in the Research Department “Plasmas with Complex Interactions” is required.

Teaching duties will concentrate on the experimental physics curriculum and especially on the compulsory and elective astronomy/astrophysics courses that are part of the faculty’s bachelor and master programs.

Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. Habilitation) or significant postdoctoral research contributions and teaching experience are as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB. We are looking for a scientist/scholar with an internationally visible research profile that complements the existing research expertise of the department.

We expect:

  • strong commitment to academic teaching at graduate and undergraduate level;
  • readiness to participate in interdisciplinary research;
  • documented ability to attract external funding;
  • readiness to contribute to joint research projects of the department;
  • commitment to public outreach activities and the support of young researchers.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunity employer.

Complete applications including CV, copies of academic certificates, list of publications, list of self-raised third-party funds, and a teaching record as well as a statement of teaching philosophy and a research plan should be sent by email to the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, 44780 Bochum, Germany or [email protected]; not later than 03/27/2019.
