Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Physics at the University of California Merced focused on the study of distant galaxies at high spatial resolution. The successful candidate will work with Professor Gillian Wilson, NSF award co-investigator Professor Gregory Rudnick, and other key team members on the analysis of observations from the GOGREEN (Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early ENvironments) survey. GOGREEN is the largest and most comprehensive spectroscopic and multi-passband imaging cluster and group survey at z>1. The successful candidate will become a core member of the GOGREEN collaboration and work within the international team to apply mature spatial deconvolution techniques to the GOGREEN imaging dataset. The resulting spatially-resolved images of cluster members and field galaxies will be utilized to study stellar mass assembly and quenching in exquisite detail at 1<z<1.5.  During the course of the appointment, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to apply deconvolution techniques to other large-area imaging datasets e.g., the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

The position comes with funding for travel and computers. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to pursue his/her own research in related areas. Additional Wilson group projects are also available in the areas of cluster cosmology, protoclusters, and ultramassive galaxies.

The candidate will have access to the facilities of the UC Observatories (Keck and Lick). The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year based on satisfactory performance. The starting date is negotiable. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy by the date of appointment. Interested applicants should submit a CV, publication record, and a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be emailed directly to Professor Wilson by February 3rd, 2023.  Please contact Prof. Wilson directly ([email protected]) with any questions about the position.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Applications from members of underrepresented minority groups are encouraged.  We are committed to offering a supportive and inclusive working environment, an ethical and safe workspace, and access to professional development opportunities.
