Job Description

The Astronomy Group of the University of Southampton's School of Physics & Astronomy invites you to join our team to manage operations of the VISTA Extragalactic Infrared Legacy Survey (VEILS) and exploit time domain data in the near-IR. As part of this work, you will have the opportunity to collaborate in exciting cutting edge science on industrial-scale AGN dust reverberation mapping, supernova cosmology with infrared light curves, and/or the detection and characterisation of infrared transients. Your involvement in the project will be tailored to your experience.

The position is a replacement for the outgoing survey manager and is funded for 1 year. As such, flexible work arrangements will be considered. The anticipated starting that is 1 September 2020 or soon thereafter.

The Southampton Astronomy Group provides a collegial environment with many opportunities to collaborate with other group members. Our main research themes are compact objects and time-domain astrophysics. The position will provide you with time and resources to explore and develop independent research.

If you are interested, please apply via the university’s job portal (deadline: Friday, 14 August 2020). Candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications in astronomy, astrophysics, or related discipline. Your application should consist of a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research interests (2 pages). Please upload all documents as one pdf file. Moreover, two letters of reference are required with contact details to be provided on application (letter requests will be sent automatically by the application system). Applications submitted by the closing date will receive full consideration, but the position remains open until filled.

Informal inquiries are particularly welcome. Please contact Dr Sebastian Hoenig, [email protected] (Twitter: @SebHoenig).
