Job Description

The Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science, a non-profit, world-class astronomical institution in Pasadena, California, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in extragalactic astronomy.

The Extragalactic Postdoctoral Fellow will work with Dr. Andrew Newman and collaborators and is expected to lead a research program related to the Lyman-Alpha Tomography IMACS Survey (LATIS). LATIS is a multi-year Magellan survey that has produced the largest 3D maps of the z~2.5 intergalactic medium (IGM) at Mpc resolution yet made, based on thousands of deep spectra of high-z galaxies. Possible research programs include investigating the emerging environmental dependence of galaxy properties and conducting follow-up observations of protoclusters and other structures detected in the LATIS maps. Other research topics are also possible based on the interests and experience of the candidate. Experience with galaxy spectroscopy, or studies related to z~2 galaxies, galaxy environments, or the IGM, is desirable but not required. The start date for this position is no later than September 1, 2022. Earlier start dates are also possible based on the needs of the candidate.

The Extragalactic Postdoctoral Fellow will be eligible and encouraged to apply for PI access to Carnegie’s observational facilities, including the twin 6.5-meter Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. Carnegie is also a full institutional member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV and V.

At Carnegie, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive community. We believe that the academic environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with a variety of viewpoints and ideas work together. As such, we urge applicants from under-represented groups and backgrounds to apply. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of gender, race/ethnicity, protected veteran status, disability, or other protected group status.

The appointment will be for two years, with a third year extension possible based on performance. The successful applicant must have completed the Ph.D. requirements before assuming the position. The application should include a cover letter expressing the candidate’s background and interest in the position, curriculum vitae including bibliography, and a description of past and current research. In addition, applicants should provide names and email addresses for three individuals willing to provide a letter of reference. For full consideration, please submit your application by January 7, 2022. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please direct any questions to Dr. Newman at [email protected].

Only applications submitted through our website will be considered. https://jobs.obs.carnegiescience.edu/jobs2022/PRA
