Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) have an opening for a joint position in observational astronomy. Applications are sought from scientists whose research interests lie in stellar astrophysics or time-domain astrophysics, and who could make intensive use of the telescopes at SAAO, including SALT and MeerLICHT.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD at the time of appointment in astronomy or a related discipline, and a track record of research in observational astronomy.  Preference will be given to applicants whose research interests include the joint UCT/SAAO MeerLICHT project, or complement the stellar astrophysics groups at UCT and SAAO.

A good publication record in refereed journals is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop her/his own research program linked to the unique capabilities of SALT and the SAAO telescopes. Candidates will have access to the South African share on SALT and full access to MeerLICHT.

Responsibilities include the teaching of courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and the supervision of postgraduate students.

The annual remuneration package for 2016, including benefits, is R558 915.
