Open Rank/Tenure Track Faculty in Astronomy 2022-2023

The Department of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in astronomy starting August 15, 2022.  Candidates may be considered at the Associate or Full Professor level with rank commensurate with qualifications. Our mission is “to provide students with the world’s best undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics education in an environment of individual attention and support.”  If this resonates with you then we think you’ll love what we have to offer. Our scenic campus in Terre Haute, IN is home to an increasingly diverse student body of 2,000 students who are as passionate to learn and create as we are to guide them. Our facilities include modern classrooms, state-of-the-art instructional laboratories, and design-focused innovation centers. Walking the halls, you can’t miss the effect that our open-door culture has on the relationships between our faculty, staff, and students.

Requirements for the position include an earned PhD in physics/astronomy or a closely related field by the start of employment. The department offers B.S. degrees in physics, engineering physics and optical engineering and an M.S. degree in optical engineering. The department also offers a minor in astronomy. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the Oakley Observatory which consists of a well-equipped on-campus teaching observatory and the Oakley Southern Sky Observatory (OSSO) located adjacent to Siding Springs in Australia. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in public outreach using the on-campus observatory and establish a vigorous research program involving undergraduates using both the on-campus and Australian telescopes. More information on the facilities can be found at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/academics/learning-and-research-facilities/o.... The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower and upper division courses in physics as well as the courses in the astronomy minor. The institute highly values exceptional teaching and therefore evidence of potential, or demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, is a plus. The Institute places a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Essential job responsibilities include teaching and advising students, continued professional development, and service to the department, Institute and professional community. Applicants should submit via https://jobs.rose-hulman.edu a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume, a statement addressing teaching philosophy and potential research projects with undergraduate students, a list of three references and a statement regarding their commitment to diversity and inclusion.  Applicants who advance through the initial screening will be asked for three references to submit recommendation letters. Review of applications will start January 15th and will continue until the position is filled.
