Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associateship at the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), Royal Observatory Edinburgh on the formation of galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) and the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM), led by Profs Avery Meiksin and Sadegh Khochfar.

We aim to use multiple simulation techniques to address key questions in galaxy formation, concentrating on observed signatures of circumgalactic gas during the EoR, with a particular focus on the origin of metal absorption lines. A central goal is to disentangle the roles of stellar feedback, black holes, and the metagalactic photoionizing background during the EoR on CGM properties.

We are seeking applicants with a strong background in cosmological simulations, theoretical astrophysics, and studies of the Intergalactic Medium. Successful candidates would have access to substantial computational resources, including Archer − the UK National Supercomputer.

The contract will be for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension. The start date is nominally September 2018, but with flexibility; the completion of a PhD is required by the start date. The position is open to applicants of all nationalities; applications from minorities are strongly encouraged.

Applicants should supply a CV, bibliography, the names of two referees, plus a research proposal of up to three pages, all contained within a

single pdf file. Applications must be made online at: www.vacancies.ed.ac.uk. Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Avery Meiksin ([email protected]). Letters of recommendation from two referees should be sent directly by email to Prof Meiksin by the closing date.

Salary Scale: Grade 7 £32,548 − £38,833.

Closing date: 15 January 2018.
