Job Description

The Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) in Shanghai, China (http://tdli.sjtu.edu.cn) invites applications for two junior fellow positions (tenure-track assistant professors) in all frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics, from exoplanets to cosmology, and from theoretical/observational astronomy to instrumental/laboratory astrophysics.

The junior fellows are expected to carry out independent research projects, supervise students, and develop astronomy courses in line with our emphasis on astrophysics within the major in physics program. The positions are open to researchers of any nationality, with highly competitive salary (500 K RMB as the minimum), housing subsidy, and start-up grant. Observers are especially encouraged to apply as China is embarking upon large observational programs.

TDLI has ample research and travel funds, infrastructures for development of astronomical instruments, and an active visitor program. Its astronomy division works closely with the astronomy department of SJTU (http://astro.sjtu.edu.cn) and gets access to its resources, including the data access of DESI, PFS, SKA and the AliCPT CMB experiment, and major observational facilities such as Subaru, CFHT, MMT, Magellan and JCMT, directly or through collaborations. Available computing resources include our institute computer cluster with 1000 CPU cores, a SGI with 256 cores and 4T shared memory, access to the SJTU supercomputer with 5000 CPU cores, and to national supercomputer centers with higher capacity. The TDLI astronomy division also works closely with its particle physics division, on dark matter search, dark energy, inflation and other frontiers in fundamental physics.

TDLI, initiated by Prof. Tsung-Dao Lee (Nobel Prize in Physics 1957), is a newly established national research institute and the current director is Prof. Frank Wilczek (Nobel Prize in Physics 2004). TDLI supports research in high energy physics, astrophysics and quantum physics, and aims for establishing a top-notch physics and astronomy research institute. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is the contractor and trustee of TDLI and is in charge of the operation of TDLI. TDLI has an internationalized environment with English as its working language, and invites candidates of all nationalities.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a brief research summary, and arrange 3 reference letters to be directly sent to [email protected]. For other inquiries please contact Prof. Pengjie Zhang ([email protected]).

Applications will be considered until the positions are filled. The institute will recommend the qualified applicants to apply for the one thousand young talents national program. The successful applicants will be able to retain the substantial benefits under the aforesaid program, in addition to the highly competitive package under offer.
