Job Description

Applications are invited for Hintze Fellowship in Astrophysical Transients

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of up to 2 years with the possibility of an extension for 1 year.

The Department of Physics invites applications for a  fellowship in the University of Oxford Hintze Centre for Astrophysical Surveys, funded through the Hintze Family Charitable Foundation. The Centre is focused on the exploitation of current surveys to build a platform for Oxford participation in LSST, Euclid, SKA and the European ELT.

We are seeking a candidate to work in the area of astrophysical transients. Phenomena selected for targeted study include accreting black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs, tidal disruption events, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts and neutron star merger/gravitational wave events. We also perform wide-field commensal searches for transients, in particular in radio data from MeerKAT. We are looking for an outstanding candidate to work on aspects of observation and interpretation of astrophysical transients, ideally making use of facilities in which Oxford is already heavily involved.

Successful candidates will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in a relevant area of astronomy or astrophysics, should have a demonstrated capacity for independent work and be capable of initiating research in a lively group. They will have the opportunity to teach and may benefit from a college association.

Previous experience in the field of astrophysical  transient studies will be an advantage.

Fellows will be expected to collaborate with faculty members in the Astrophysics sub-department in areas of common interest

Only applications received before midday 7 January 2022 can be considered. You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests and your CV.  You should arrange for your 3 referees to send your reference to  [email protected] before the closing date.
