1855 Professor of Data Science

Position Summary:

1855 Professorships being introduced at MSU were explicitly created to broaden the diversity of the community of scholars on campus. The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE), in cooperation with the College of Natural Science and the College of Engineering at Michigan State University, is proud to announce the Data Science 1855 Professorship, to be filled in the 2022-2023 academic year. CMSE seeks a leader in the field of methodological development for Data Science.  Preference will be given to individuals who show a strong commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This is an open rank tenure track position.  All areas of data science method development across STEM will be considered.  Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in method development for big data and its application including, but not limited to, environmental science, genomics, neuroscience, molecular biology, atmospheric science, astrophysics, plant biology, and image processing. This position may be jointly appointed with one other department across the College of Natural Science, with the specific choice of department dependent upon the candidate’s interest and expertise.

Background about CMSE and Data Science:

The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering was founded in 2015 and has steadily grown since then.  CMSE focuses on the science of method development and its applications to cutting edge problems in both data science and scientific computing across all areas of STEM.  Our goal is to enable high impact cross-disciplinary science throughout STEM as it pertains to understanding and modeling the world around us.  CMSE currently has 34 faculty, the majority of whom have joint appointments in one of 13 partner departments across MSU. The department encourages interdisciplinary, collaborative research, the promotion of open science and methodology, and the use of computation to advance equity and racial justice in society.   CMSE has a strong track record of mentoring and career development as evidenced by 14 early-career awards from the DoD, DoE, NSF, NIH, and the Sloan Foundation.  We anticipate that future hiring in CMSE and its partner departments will emphasize both method development and applications relating to data science in a broad range of fields.
