The US Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station (USNOFS) operates telescopes of apertures between 1.0-m and 1.55-m for near-infrared and optical astrometry and photometry of natural celestial and artificial objects for both astrophysical and DoD applications. A new 1.8-m telescope with an initial emphasis on adaptive optics (AO) observations will begin construction this summer. USNO observations are also being obtained with the 3.8-m UKIRT telescope in Hawai'i for near-infrared sky surveys and of targeted objects at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths.
USNO is soliciting applications to fill a permanent staff astronomer position in its Infrared Operations Division at USNOFS. This Division is primarily responsible for high-accuracy near-infrared astrometry and photometry used to determine parallaxes, proper motions, and luminosities of brown dwarfs and for near- and mid-infrared observational programs being carried out with UKIRT. The new hire will be expected to participate in the present programs, participate in the planning for future infrared programs and instrumentation, participate in the development of the new 1.8-m telescope and instrumentation at infrared or visible wavelengths, and bring a strong independent research interest in observational astronomy compatible with the assets and interests of USNO.
Interested persons should have a PhD or equivalent experience in ground-based infrared astronomy and have a natural interest in on-going programs. Additional expertise with visible wavelength astronomy, astrometry, AO, and/or instrumentation development would be desirable. The position will be permanent Federal Civil Service, after a two year probationary period, at either a GS12 or GS13 level, depending on the applicant's experience and will include full Civil Service benefits. We expect the position to be posted on USAJOBS (https://www.usajobs.gov) for a two to three week period during July 2018, where formal applications will be processed. We also invite resumes to be sent to us at the above postal or e-mail address for informal preliminary review. This position is restricted to USA citizens and the successful applicant must have the ability to obtain and hold a security clearance.
