Research Fellow in Supernova and Transient Research

Ref: 18/106173

School of Mathematics and Physics

Applications are invited for postdoctoral positions in the area of supernova and transient studies in the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen’s.

These ERC Starting Grant funded posts are available for three years and will join the recently formed SUPERSTARS research group led by Principal Investigator Dr Kate Maguire.  The goals of the SUPERSTARS project include building a new state-of-the-art Type Ia supernova sample to constrain their progenitor and explosion physics, as well as exploring the diversity of white-dwarf explosions by combining new observational measurements with detailed light curve and spectral modelling. Members of the SUPERSTARS group will have access to data from the Pan-STARRS and ATLAS surveys, from which data for this project will come.

The successful candidates will benefit from the lively and international research environment of the Centre, as well as the expertise and knowledge provided by the world-leading supernova and transient group. The supernova and transient group is currently composed of three academic staff, four postdoctoral researchers, and seven postgraduate students.

The successful post holders will be active members of the supernova and transient research team within the Centre, they will assist in the delivery of new research programmes and provide complementary expertise to the existing programmes, and will carry out high level, professional scientific research that is globally competitive in the supernova and transient research area.

The successful candidates must:

  • Have a PhD awarded or about to be awarded in astrophysics.
  • Have at least three years’ relevant research experience.
  • Have a publication record commensurate with stage of career.
  • Have demonstrated and proven expertise in observational and/or theoretical astrophysics in a topic relevant to supernova and transient research.

Further information on the group and its research may be obtained at http://star.pst.qub.ac.uk/

Informal enquires may be directed to Dr Kate Maguire, email: [email protected]

Anticipated interview date: Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 February 2018

Starting salary: £32,548 per annum

Closing date: Wednesday 14 February 2018
