Job Description

The Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) at Northwestern University invites applications for a postdoctoral associate research position with Professor Raffaella Margutti in the area of Time-Domain and Multi-messenger Astrophysics. The subject of investigation includes supernovae, tidal disruptions of stars by super-massive black holes, gamma-ray bursts, and electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The successful candidates will lead and participate in observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, in one or more of these areas. Applicants with previous experience in radio/mm observations and UV/optical/IR spectroscopy and imaging (from space or from the ground) are especially encouraged to apply.

Margutti’s group has active programs on HST and Swift (UV), Fermi, Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (gamma-rays to soft X-rays), VLA, ATCA, GMRT and ALMA (radio to mm), SOAR, MMT, and Keck (optical).

The postdoctoral position is for two years, renewable for a third year upon mutual agreement with a nominal starting date of September 1, 2020. An earlier or later start is negotiable depending on the applicant’s availability. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or equivalent, by the date of appointment.

Northwestern has institutional access to several mid- and large-scale optical/IR ground-based telescope facilities, including Keck and MMT. Postdoctoral researchers can apply for nights through the CIERA’s internal time allocation process (see https://sites.northwestern.edu/cieraobserving/ for more information).

These positions will be part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) at Northwestern. Successful applicants will benefit from interaction with a broad interdisciplinary group of researchers and will be immersed in a diverse and dynamic intellectual environment (learn more about CIERA’s programs and activities).

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, list of publications, a statement (3 pages maximum) explaining research interests and qualifications, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly. Submit all application materials, including letters of reference, electronically to Academic Jobs Online Job ID 14395. All questions should be sent by email to [email protected]. Applications that are complete by December 1, 2019 will receive full consideration.

CIERA has a strong commitment to the achievement of excellence through diversity among its faculty and staff. Northwestern University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer of all protected classes, including veterans and individuals with disabilities. Women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply. Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
