Job Description

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Southern California (https://dornsife.usc.edu/physics/) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in theoretical or computational astrophysics and cosmology. We seek a diverse pool of applicants who will engage in rigorous inquiry and contribute towards a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere within the Department and the USC community as a whole.

Located in Los Angeles, California, USC Physics & Astronomy has a vibrant and growing astrophysics and cosmology program including expertise in cosmological data analysis, and a leading role in the Simons Observatory. USC faculty members maintain close collaborations with nearby institutions like the Carnegie Observatories and JPL.

USC supports the research in computational astrophysics through its Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC, https://carc.usc.edu/). USC promotes emerging interdisciplinary fields. Candidates that would bridge connections with the USC Computer Science Department as well as Carnegie Observatories and JPL are particularly welcome to apply.

The Department places a strong emphasis on providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. We are especially interested in candidates who can make significant contributions to improving the diversity, equity, and inclusivity of the department through their research, teaching, and service. We particularly encourage applicants from groups that are underrepresented in physical sciences, such as Black, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and Latinx scholars, women and gender minorities; as well as individuals with disabilities, and protected veterans. Applicants at all post-doctoral levels are encouraged to apply, including those with non-traditional career backgrounds (e.g. working in the private sector) and those who have taken time off for family reasons.

USC recognizes family-related challenges such as dual career paths and single parenting, and it will make best efforts to accommodate the candidates’ needs in this respect. The Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program at USC (https://wise.usc.edu) offers support for women in science and engineering on a variety of work-and-family-life issues, mentoring, as well as networking possibilities. The position has an anticipated start date of Fall 2021, but later start dates can be considered. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in physics, astronomy, or a related field.

In order to be considered for this position, applicants are required to submit an electronic USC application; follow this job link or paste in a browser: https://usccareers.usc.edu/job/los-angeles/assistant-professor-in-theoretical-or-computational-astrophysics-and-cosmology/1209/17830019, and the application must include:

● A cover letter summarizing their application
● A curriculum vitae, including peer-reviewed publications
● A research statement detailing past research and proposing future research
● A teaching statement describing their approach to teaching and education in general
● A statement detailing their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics
and astronomy, as well as their present and proposed future contributions to this issue
● The names of three individuals who will be contacted by USC for letters of reference

Review of the application will start on December 15 and will continue until the position is filled.

USC is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law or USC policy. USC will consider for employment all qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring ordinance.
